City Guide Almeria
The city of Almeria is located and the edge of a mountain range in south eastern Spain with a beautiful unspoilt coastline, surrounded by charming whitewashed villages.
Almeria' center is dominated by the Alcazaba fortress, from the Arab period, which commands magnificent views across the coastline. From the castle there are superb vistas of the city's well-known 'La Chanca' old-town area.
The city's cathedral was erected in 1524 to replace an even earlier one destroyed by an earthquake some two years before. The architecture of the Almeria is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles. The city museum is home to many interesting items found by the Belgian historian Louis Siret as well as a wide collection of Roman and Iberian artifacts housed in the 'Sala de la Historia Antigua'.
The resort areas outside Almeria have fabulous beaches that are really only accessible by hiring a car, as public transport is very limited. The best places for eating are to be found close the Paseo de Almeria facing the sea.
The regions around Almeria are famous for their cave-villages in which many homes are literally dug into the soft sandstone cliffs. The seaside village of Mojacar is justifiably becoming a popular tourist resort although there are also charming villages to visit such as Vera, San Jose etc which are all well worth a visit.
The international airport at Almeria lies about 10km from the city facing the sea and is served by an increasing number of low-cost airlines in addition to national carrier Iberia or many charter flights.
